BIOGRAPHY
May Tian is a pianist currently studying at the University of British Columbia School of Music under Dr. Wayne Weng. Born in Beijing and raised in Vancouver, she began piano studies at the age of four and has since developed a versatile musical background in piano, cello, singing, and composition.
She has been recognized as a Young Steinway Artist (2024) and a Steinway Scholar (2025). She is a Gold Prize winner of the Steinway Spirio Concerto Competition Canada and the Steinway Piano Competition Canada, and performed at the Winners Concert at Carnegie Hall Weill Hall in 2023. She has also received numerous additional awards and distinctions at both local and international levels, and previously studied piano under Ian Parker.
May is a registered piano teacher, holding her teaching license with the RCM. She holds ARCT Diplomas in both Piano Performance and Cello Performance, along with ARCT certifications in Theory, Harmony & Counterpoint, and History, as well as formal training in Piano Pedagogy.
In addition to her work as a pianist, she also received her cello training under Joseph Elworthy, whose guidance continues to inform her collaborative and expressive musicianship.
Beyond performance, May is dedicated to music education and community engagement. As the founder of the May Music Club, she leads initiatives to provide accessible music education for young students, reflecting her commitment to sharing music as both an art form and a meaningful way of connection.
